24 Jan 11 Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson: Alabama Crimson Tide RBs Greatest Duo Ever?
Brian A. Westerholt/Getty ImagesOkay, so if you haven't heard yet, Alabama is really good at football. Now that that is established, here is the main reason Alabama is so good: They have the greatest running back duo of all time. Not only do they have the greatest duo in history, but they also have the best two backs in college football in 2010.The Trophy Winner Anyone who follows college football even somewhat closely could tell you that Mark Ingram won the Heisman Trophy in 2009 over the pretty boy and fan favorite Tim Tebow and a multitude of Arizona Cardinals jersey
others. Last season, Ingram rushed for a total of 1,658 yards and 17 touchdowns on his way to the Heisman Trophy. Ingram dominated SEC defenses and was virtually unstoppable. He averaged 6.1 yards a carry, which is almost unheard of for a season. Needless to say, he was voted the best player in college football. Despite knee surgery before the season began and missing the first two games, it looks like Ingram hasn't lost a step in 2010. He has run the ball a total of 33 times for a video game-like 308 yards, averaging almost 10 yards a carry. Along with these crazy numbers he has run for four touchdowns, including a 54-yard dash in an impressive win at Arkansas. The Second String Enough about the praised Heisman winner; let's talk about the second-string running back Trent Richardson. Who wants to hear about a second-string back? Well, everyone wants to when the team's second-string back is considered by many as the No. 2 back in the nation. While backing up Ingram in 2009, Richardson piled up 145 carries for 751 yards and eight touchdowns. This is an average of a little over five yards a carry. It looks like Richardson is picking up right where he left off last year this season. He has already carried the ball 47 times for a total of 356 yards along with four touchdowns this season. Yeah, Atlanta Falcons jersey
the second string has better numbers than the first string right now, but you have to factor in that Ingram missed the first two games of the season and is still not 100 percent. As a Duo Well, if notthoroughlyimpressed by their individual numbers, just think that one needs to add these two sets of statistics together to get a feel for the Crimson Tide's running game as a whole. Together in 2009, the duo rushed for a whopping 2,409 total yards on the way to a national title. This is an average of 5.8 yards every time one of these two beasts gets the ball. The numbers are even more impressive so far in 2010.The dynamic duo has rushed for a total of 664 yards this season so far. 224 of these yards were earned against the No. 10 team in the nation Arkansas. For the year the two backs are averaging 8.3 yards a carry. If this duo can stay healthy and maintain these types of numbers, they will be without a doubt the best tandem of running backs college football has ever seennot only because of the impressive numbers, but also because of the fact they will win back-to-back national championships. They have already joined the likes of Reggie Bush-LenDale White (USC), Laurence Maroney-Marion Barber (Minnesota), and Darren McFadden-Felix Jones (Arkansas) as one of the greatest duos in history, but if the numbersBaltimore Ravens jersey
keep piling up, and the Tide keep on rolling, they will go down as the all-time greatest tandem in college football. James Evens is a Purdue student and Basketball/Football Featured Columnist for the Boilermakers.

24 Jan 11 College Football Week 3 Primer: Iowa @ Arizona Only Ranked Teams Facing Off
Jamie Squire/Getty ImagesWeek three is already here. We have already had big games and blowouts, upsets and overtimes. Expect more of the same all year long.Thursday Sept 16Cincinnati at North Carolina StateBoth the ACC and the Big East have been taking hits all season and are being considered the two weakest BCS Reebok Minnesota Vikings #84 Randy Moss Realtree camo Jersey
conferences. The upside, one of them will get a win.Friday Sept 17Kansas at Southern MissBoth recovered from opening week losses to pick up week two wins.California at NevadaBoth teams are 2-0 and are averaging 50 points a game. Could be a shoot out.Saturday Sept 18Arkansas at GeorgiaGeorgia is already down a game in the SEC. Arkansas is riding their highest ranking since 2006.Georgia Tech at North CarolinaGeorgia Tech is looking to recover from the upset loss at Kansas while North Carolina is only taking the field for the second time this season and the first since they nearly had a comeback win against LSU.Connecticut at TempleTemple is hoping to have a huge season and lots of people think they can. Connecticut was an early contender for the Big East but some doubt them after being blown out by Michigan.Maryland at West VirginiaIf you would have asked me at the start of the season who I would have picked to win, I wouldn't hesitate for a second in picking West Virginia. After watching Maryland and Navy, I don't know who I would pick in this.North Texas at ArmyI really thought North Texas had a strong running game but so far the passing has been the strength. Army needs this as it is still early and they hold hope for a bowl game.Iowa State at Kansas StateAn early lead in in the Big XII North is on the line here. Kansas State has been impressive thus far and could be a dark horse contender.East Carolina at Virginia TechTwo years ago it was East Carolina that upset Virginia Tech, now Virginia Tech is coming off an even bigger upset and is hoping not to start off 0-3.Hawaii at ColoradoI don't really know what it is about this one that makes me want to watch it but there is something.BYU at Florida StateLast year this was a very hyped up game that turned out to be a blow out. This year I am not sure what to expect but I am not as hyped for it so maybe it will be good.USC at MinnesotaUSC has not been living up to the expectations that many had for them heading into the season. good at it. Minnesota might be looking for a new head coach soon.Air Force at OklahomaWould you be surprised if I told you that Air Force has overall better stats than Oklahoma. Air Force is actually the top rushing team in the country. Their defense isn't too bad either.Nebraska at WashingtonAfter last seasons closer than expected game with LSU in Seattle, this game has a lot of people calling for an upset win by the home team Huskies. In my opinion it depends on which Washington squad shows up. The week one loss to BYU team will lose this but the week two win over Syracuse team could win.Arizona State at WisconsinThis could be part of a make or break season for both squads. Not to mention it could also be serious for Dennis Erickson and him retaining a job.Washington State at SMUWashington State won last week but barely. They won this game last season, but barely. Going in the biggest surprise is that June Jones and SMU are more of a running team this season.Baylor at TCUThey both used to be in the Southwest Conference and played every year. Since going to different conferences, they have only met twice. TCU has won both.Louisville at Oregon StateLast time these two played, Louisville blew out Oregon State 63-27. In all honesty, I could see it happening again, but the other way.Clemson at AuburnIt's weird that at 2-0 each, I don't feel like I have been hearing much about this game.Mississippi State at LSUMississippi State didn't look too bad even though they lost last week. Could score an upset along the way, this could be it.San Diego State at MissouriSan Diego State has been dominant this season although they haven't really played anyone of significance. This one could be closer than some think, or San Diego State will be exposed as pretenders who killed two cupcakes.Notre Dame at Michigan StateMichigan State has come on strong behind the running of a couple of young backs. Notre Dame fell victim not only to Michigan but also the injury bug. Is Crist back?Fresno State at Utah StateFresno State is pretty well respected as a competitive team out of the WAC. Utah State has long been a lower tier team but gave Oklahoma a scare in week one.Texas at Texas TechHas had some impact on the Big XII south race in recent years and the last time Lubbock, Arizona Cardinals jersey
Tech upset number one Texas in the final seconds.Iowa at ArizonaOddly enough this is the only game all weekend that features two ranked teams. Honestly don't know what to make of this one. Arizona has looked good so far but that Holiday Bowl is still lingering.Houston at UCLAKeenum being out kind of changes this whole game in my opinion. I would have gone with Houston big but now, not so sure.Wake Forest at StanfordBoth teams are 2-0 and gave us quite the game last year

22 Jan 11 College Football Thoughts: What I Think About The 3rd Week Of The 2010 Season
Cameron Newton (right) was one of many great performers on Saturday.Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesIt was a busy weekend, not billed quite as highly as "Monster Saturday" or the opening weekend, but perhaps filled with the most intriguing match-ups yet with some of the best finishes of the season.-First Baltimore Ravens jersey
off, the early action. I was skeptical of watching the Arkansas-Georgia match-up today, especially after the way the Bulldogs played a week ago in South Carolina. But I figured "Hey, at the very least, I'll get a good look at Ryan Mallett." This was my first game watching Mallett live, and I really like what I see. I like the way he looks dropping back, with a timely release well beyond his years. I like how he looks cool and calm in the pocket, with his passes always seeming to go right where it's supposed to. I really like seeing his leadership on the road, helping his team get the win and establish itself among the 2010SEC elite. I've heard from many people that Arkansas has the best wide receivers in the SEC. This I have to somewhat disagree with. Though I will say these receivers have some of the best hands I've ever seen on one team, they need to work on their route running. I saw Mallett under pressure, but these wide outs weren't getting separation couldn't find holes in the coverage.-As the scores scrolled across the bottom of the screen, I saw Michigan struggling mightily with Massachusetts. Now, to be fair, Massachusetts is a well-coached program, but I thought Michigan was past this whole "playing way down to your competition". Another big game from the quarterback saved Michigan, but that won't be enoughagainst some of the better Big Ten schools.-I also saw Virginia Tech losing to Eastern Carolina. I think it's pretty common amongst college football fans to enjoy upsets, but nobody likes seeing traditionally good programs completely fall apart. I was happy to see Virginia Tech pull it together.-Connecticut lost to Temple by 14, mostly because of Temple running back Bernard Pierce, who I think is one of college football's best kept secrets. Between him, Dion Lewis, and Evan Royster, the state of Buffalo Bills jersey
Pennsylvania has three NFL quality tailbacks playing on Saturdays.- It's always a tragedy to have great potential wasted due to suspensions, and that's the reality in North Carolina. I think the same thing I though after the LSU game. If they had all of those players they could have had, they would be ACC champs at least.-I think TCU should be getting all of the respect, or more that Boise State is getting. The Horned Frogs beat Oregon State in week 1, and made a good Baylor team look very, very bad.-It's always a shame to have a game be so well have to be decided be a field goal/penalty/missed field goal. After watching Clemson and Auburn, every starting player's jersey was tattered up, every player grimacing, knowing they're bodies will feel ten times worse tomorrow. Then a kicker, who's jersey probably still had the tag on it, came in and kicked a beauty to send the game into double overtime. But wait, a snap infraction makes them have to kick it again, and we all know how that goes for a young kicker on the road. I say congrats to both teams for a great game.-I'm used to seeing Michigan Statewin last second games on the hard wood with that great basketball team. Seeing them make a gutsy, legendary call against the Fighting Irish was something to see. I watched this game in its entirety, and couldn't help but feeling like it was a game MSU was going to lose last minuteif they didn't do something extraordinary. Seeing 70,000 fans fly out of their seats as their favorite team beat a century-old rival is part of why I love college football-Quick Hits: -Carolina Panthers jersey
Welcome back Mark Ingram. Duke's run defense was your welcome back gift.-Florida has the athletes to make up for the inexperience at key positions.-Nebraska has the offense to capitalize off of a great defense.-Oklahoma, though inconsistent, shouldn't be overlooked in the Big 12.-Enjoy watching a small school get thier heart ripped out? Watch the end of the San Diego State- Missouri game.-Oregon! Save some points for your Pac-10 schedule.

15 Jan 11 Detroit Lions Rod Marinelli Shawn Bryson Eddie Drummond Jared DeVries Kalimba Edwards Vernon Fox
The dust has temporarily settled on the NFL acquisitions market, giving Detroit Lions backers a chance to look at the seven silver-and-blue formerly unrestricted free agents now solidly placed on the roster. The list includes:RB Shawn Bryson - Buffalo Bills' castoff Bryson joined the Lions three games into the season in 2003 and led Detroit that year in rushing yardage (606 yards) and receptions (54). Despite experiencing a trio of sub .400 seasons, Bryson re-upped with the Lions this year after racking up 590 yards of total offense in 2006. the No. 2 tailback and third-down specialist of seasons 2004 and 2005 was reportedly promised "a key role" in Coach Rod "Almighty" Marinelli's offense.DE Jared DeVries - The eight-year man turned in another solid performance in the Motor City last year, totaling 22 tackles and adding three sacks to match his career high. A member of the Detroit Lions since being drafted in 1999, this re-signing was exactly what DeVries wanted, and he should be shoring up the Detroit line for a few more years. WR Eddie Drummond - Lions PR remains high on Drummond, a guy who has tallied a grand total of two receptions and minus-three yards in four years. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz has been quoted on Drummond a few times in the offseason, recently comparing him to Az Hakim and stating that he "should be a good backup."DE Kalimba Edwards - Chased by the Atlanta Falcons, Oakland Raiders, and by some accounts, all but signed by the Cleveland Browns, Marinelli personally appealed to the team's 2005 sack leader to stick around. The result? A fat five-year, $20 million Reebok Oakland Raiders #21 Nnamdi Asomugha Realtree camo Jersey
payout and a pigeonholing of Edwards into the Tampa 2.DB Vernon Fox - Fox was a key player on Detroit special teams in 2005 and a crucial resigning. He served as the Lions' special teams captain and racked up twenty tackles last year, also doing double duty as backup safety. C Brock Gutierrez - Gutierrez was the last of unrestricted free agents to resign with the silver-and-blue. Going into his tenth season as a pro and second as a Lion, Gutierrez played in all sixteen games last year, primarily on special teams.LB LeVar Woods - Woods played in just four games in his first season as a Lion in 2005 after battling recurring injuries for the majority of the year. In the season's last three matches, however, the veteran came back with a vengeance, grabbing eight, seven and eleven tackles. Detroit brass hopes to get a bit more out of Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers #86 Hines Ward Realtree camo Jersey
the former Arizona Cardinal this season. In Detroit, everything is up in the air right now. As new leader Marinelli is shaking it down from game plans to quarterback to practice squads, the Lions are certain to sport a new look in 2006 ("thank god," you can hear the faithful mutter). Meanwhile, a needed smidgen of stability is provided by these seven; if they aren't the Magnificent Seven, well, they ain't the Seven Dwarves, either. All Marinelli's hoping is that they're a lucky seven.Have a question or a comment about this article? Have a compliment? A criticism?
